Prof. Walter Stovhase born in 1933 hails from Germany. He initiated his professional career in 1952 when he enrolled himself in the faculty of Naval Architecture at Rostock University, Germany. On graduating as a Certified Engineer in Naval Architecture discipline he continued his professional quest by taking up a position as a Research Engineer at Shipbuilding Institute in Pots Jan in 1957. During his tenure in Pots Jan he undertook various assignments and concentrated on hydrodynamic model testing on various hull form resistance and propulsion. He during this time was also responsible for introducing electronic data processing as a means to rationalizing test results. In 1967 he took up the noble profession of teaching as a faculty in the Naval Architecture division in the Department of Mechanics of solid body at the University of Rostock, his alma mater. Having mastered the aspects of resistance, propulsion and structural strength, he was conferred the title of Dr. of Engineering for his thesis in stability of plain structures with cut outs. The golden years of Cochin University of Science and Technology started started in 1979 when Prof. Stovhase was called upon to take the responsibility of imparting Naval Architecture training to the students of Dept. of Ship Technology .
During the period from 1979 to 1995 Prof. Stovhase was the main pillar stone of the department of Ship Technology in teaching more than 300 Naval Architecture students the subjects of Ship Design. Many of his students occupy important positions from classifications societies to shipyards and research institutes.
